The Importance of (Good) Product Photography

We usually associate the success of a business with factors that are considered indispensable or a priority.

Whether it is having an appealing and functional website design or an attractive physical store, a website that values usability and flexibility to adapt to various devices or a comfortable interior design and decoration, payment methods that instill confidence in the customer, solid marketing and advertising strategies directed at the target audience, search engine positioning efforts such as SEO, active presence in social networks, are some pillars that underpin success.

The weight that the listed factors have in the scales of a business’ success is undeniable, and when conceived and executed correctly, they go unnoticed by the consumer. Despite this, photography is often relegated to a secondary role.

The role of product photography

As we can deduce, conveying an overall image of quality and trust is crucial for e-commerce businesses, but sometimes one of the best (and perhaps most obvious) tools that contributes the most to a good image is overlooked: images.

While it is understandable that today, more than ever, some entrepreneurs choose to take pictures of their own products, since photographic technology is accessible to virtually everyone, with smartphones with sophisticated cameras and increasingly user-friendly DSLR cameras, the reality is that in a user experience that is supposed to be smooth, amateur photography, when inserted into a business that wants to convey an image of quality, will inevitably tarnish that claim.

As an example, let’s take the case of e-commerce: if everything on your website is done by professionals, except the photography of your products, you will automatically (and unnecessarily) create a weak link in what should be your strong point: attracting consumers with your products. In an online business the consumer cannot physically interact with the products before buying them. Professional photographers are able to get a faithful representation of their products, which means that they do not exist for the customer when he receives his product.

If you entrust the photographic work to someone who provides the service professionally, you not only guarantee that the images of your products will be at the level of the best design, but you will also make your products the focus of attention and stand out to the consumer. After all, the product is what you want to sell.
